Applying for a Kenyan ID(Step by Step Guide)

The process of applying for an ID in Kenya had been quite a hectic experience.The Government of kenya has put mechanisms in place to streamlined this process and made it less of a hustle.The step by step guidelines below are to make it easier for you. 

  • Ensure you have both parents IDs & photocopies for each, original birth certificate and photocopy ,school leaving cert and a photocopy (results slip and photocopy if available) and lastly your birth clinic card.
  • Take these documents to your Ass. Chief . He/she should give you a signed letter if satisfied. If not he may ask you to see the village elder. 
  • Ensure you arrive at the D.Os office early in the morning together with all your documents due to the large number of people. 
  • Return the form and documents to the appropriate officer. You may return it on another day.
  • The officer should take your thumb prints and hand you forms that you should take for signing. Start from the Ass. Chief you may leave the forms with the officer , D.O, D.C 
  • Return the forms where you got them. The officers should take your fingerprints . All the fingers and palms. They should then take your picture , if not, ensure you have passport size photos.
  • Finally you should be issued with a waiting card and advised on when to collect your ID.Probably after 1 month. Check the status of your ID at www.identity.go.ke

The Immigration Department has introduced new rules that will take effect on May 1st 2015 for citizens who wish to apply, replace or renew a Kenyan passport. From now citizens will have to fill the application form online, pay the passport fees via MPESA beforehand and then download and print the filled application. With the new rules the Immigration Department has shifted the cost of printing the application form to citizens while also going cashless. With the cash that immigration will save on printing one would have hoped that they would make the passport fees cheaper but they have instead added 50 shillings to each of the previous fees.
